Tony DeMarco to Appear at Windham Boxing Event Prior to Hall of Fame Induction
Windham, NH – [May 1, 2019] – One week shy of his long overdue induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame, former welterweight champion of the world Tony DeMarco (58-12-1, 33 KO’s) will appear at the Castleton Banquet and Conference Center in Windham, New Hampshire as part of Boston Boxing Promotions’ evening of professional boxing.
“I enjoy the fights in Windham, New Hampshire, and I always love meeting the fans,” said DeMarco.
In January of 2018, Boston Boxing Promotions began a campaign for members of the Boxing Writers Association of America to finally recognize DeMarco’s accomplished career with an enshrinement in the Hall of Fame. In December 2018, it was announced that DeMarco would be enshrined in the Hall of Fame this coming June as a member of the Hall of Fame Class of 2019.
“We are pleased that those who have votes for the Hall of Fame came to the realization that Tony is deserving of this honor,” said Boston Boxing Promotions President Peter Czymbor. “Just a week before induction weekend, it’s fitting Tony will be spending time with us in Windham, New Hampshire amongst the fans who rallied for this cause over one year ago.”
DeMarco won the world welterweight title from New Jersey’s Johnny Saxton in 1955 before losing it later in the year to Hall of Famer Carmen Basilio. From 1955 through 1958 DeMarco fought a stretch of 16 fights in a row against fighters who were either world champions, world title challengers or top-ten contenders. This was during a time without splintered titles and less weight divisions within the sport. His 1955 rematch with Basilio was named Ring Magazine “Fight of the Year.” At age 87, DeMarco is the oldest living boxing world champion.
DeMarco will be available for autographs & pictures and will be selling copies of his autobiography, “Nardo: Memoirs of a Boxing Champion.”
