FROM COURT TO CANVAS: O’CONNELL VS. BOYINGTON THIS SATURDAY IN WINDHAM

Windham, NH  [April 23, 2018] – Windham, NH   – When North Andover’s “Irish” Tommy O’Connell (1-0) and Maine’s Bruce Boyington (1-0) meet this coming Saturday in a four-round welterweight fight at the Castleton Banquet and Conference Center in Windham, New Hampshire, it will be more than their identical records that are similar.

Before boxing, both men started their athletic endeavors on the basketball court. O’Connell was a standout as a member of the North Andover Scarlet Knights basketball team earning a spot on The Eagle Tribune all-star team in 2010 before taking his talents to Roger Williams University in Rhode Island.

Boyington also played basketball at the collegiate level at Eastern Maine Community College where he led the nation in Division 3 schools for steals. He was a team captain for three of his four years. He was also second in the country in assists and 14th in scoring at one-point.

Both fighters have also admirably served in the United States military. O’Connell was a member of the Coast Guard, while Boyington is a veteran of the Marines.

“It’s amazing how similar their stories are,” said Boston Boxing Promotions President Peter Czymbor.

“From a boxing stand point, I knew this was an evenly matched fight as they’re both 1-0 with their pro debut boxing wins coming via unanimous decisions. I also knew they were veterans of the United States military. I knew Tommy had a history on the hardwood in North Andover and Roger Williams in Rhode Island.  And, of course, everyone knows of Bruce’s many accomplishments around the globe in the MMA cage and as a Taekwondo black belt.  But I actually wasn’t aware of Bruce’s basketball accolades at Eastern Maine Community College until he mentioned how similar he was to Tommy based on newspaper articles he read.”

“These are two respectful and professional fighters who are above all else tough and talented. I can’t wait to see them in the ring next Saturday in Windham and may the best fighter win.”
